Handel's Messiah in the Great Hall
Enjoy an evening of unforgettable music in the magnificent setting of Burghley’s Great HallOne of the most famous oratorio ever written and perhaps Handel’s best known work, Messiah needs little introduction. Written in just twenty-four days, the work is known for its ability to move an audience from sorrow to joy, from despair to sheer exultation through its solos and choruses, including the famous Hallelujah chorus. Some 275 years on from the first performance of Messiah, this amazing work continues to be hugely popular with audiences around the world.Performed at Burghley by the Cantus Choir and Orchestra conducted by Alwyn Pollard with acclaimed soloists Belinda Evans (Soprano), Vanessa Heine (Alto), George Pooley (Tenor) and Robert Gildon (Bass).
With its double hammer-beam ceiling, oak panelling and stunning Tudor fireplace, the Great Hall is a wonderfully atmospheric setting for this special performance of Handel’s masterpiece. The evening begins with refreshments in the Orangery Restaurant, where interval drinks will also be served.

Garsington Opera for All presents An Introduction to Handel’s Semele and Opera Highlights
19th October 2017 at 20:00
Come and enjoy a night at the opera! Join Belinda Evans (Soprano) and Rob Gildon (Baritone) for a FREE introduction to the world of opera.
The singers will present an introduction to Handel’s Semele – a love story with a twist; the god Jupiter is captivated by the all-too-human Semele and entrances her with his promises. She exults in everything Jupiter has to offer but in this parable of over-ambition and over-indulgence, Semele flirts with danger and suffers the consequences.
After the interval, the singers will perform a range of opera highlights – well-loved, familiar songs that you may have heard before without realising that they were originally composed for an opera!
Whether you’re completely new to opera or already a fan, come along and enjoy an evening of beautiful music and captivating stories.
Although this event is free to attend, booking is essential!
